Chandeliers have been considered the most luxurious way to light up a space for as long as we can remember. Whether large or small, these ceiling light fittings are designed to be the focal point in any room. As trends have come and gone over the years, we have discovered ways to integrate these beautiful light fittings into various aesthetics in both traditional and modern homes.
Choosing the right size ceiling light fitting for your space involves quite a bit of research. First of all, you need to consider the size of the room. A good tip is to add the room's width and length in feet and that sum, in inches, gives you a good starting point for the chandelier's diameter. For example, a room that is 15 feet by 20 feet: 15 + 20 = 35. The chandelier's diameter should be around 35 inches.
It is also important to consider the height of the room, as the height of the ceiling affects the chandelier's height. In spaces where above the floor clearance is needed, such as the foyer or hallway, it is best to ensure the light fitting hangs at least 7 feet above the floor. As a result, if you have high ceilings then you have much more room to play with and you can get very creative and invest into a light fitting which is quote long. However if your ceilings are relatively low, then you might need to compromise and find a lower profile chandelier for the space.
If you want to embrace timeless charm in your living spaces, traditional chandeliers with intricate metalwork and crystal accents are perfect. For instance, they can add a touch of sophistication to your dining rooms or grand entryways, while standing the test of time. These type of ceiling light fittings usually work best with candle bulbs, as the word chandelier derives from old French where it described a candelabra style light that would have held candles. For instance, Laura Ashley chandeliers are great examples of traditional style light fittings.
To create a sleek and contemporary look, look out for modern chandeliers with minimalist designs and sleek finishes, such as glass or chrome. For instance, the Angle pendant below can offer a wide variety of frame and glass colour combinations to fit your colour scheme. There are three frame colours; satin black, polished nickel and brass, and an equal number of glass to choose from; clear, smoked or amber, as a result, allowing you to really personalise this modern light fitting. One of the most unique selling points of this collection is the dual application of how the mixture of long and short glass are fitted to the lights, giving two visual options. Every frame from the pendants to floor lamps can situate the glass either all vertically for a clean cylindrical outline or at a diagonal angle creating a more uneven decorative effect. Not all chandeliers are suitable for use on sloped ceilings, so it is important to check that before purchasing. General rule is that chandeliers with a chain suspension system, such as traditional styles, are often designed to work on sloped ceilings as the chain can be adjusted to hang vertically, regardless of the angle of the ceiling.
In order to keep your crystal chandelier looking like new, proper maintenance is essential. These days there are a variety of options available, but before you start, make sure to turn off the power. If you prefer an easier option, we recommend investing into a crystal chandelier cleaning spray. They are effective to use and safe for all crystal glass.
You can also clean the crystal chandeliers with warm water and dish soap. However, to get the best possible shine and remove stubborn dirt, alcohol might be a more suitable fit. In that case you will need to mix four parts of distilled water with one part of isopropyl alcohol and then use a lint-free cloth to clean them. To clean the frame which have metal components, use a soft wet cloth, wipe clean and buff with a very soft dry cloth. It is not advised to use any metal polish, as it can damage the protective finish on the light fitting.
As you can see, deciding on a chandelier can come with a quite a few consideration, but don't let that put you off. If you need any help choosing the right light fitting for your home, get in touch.
