All light fittings are supplied with an IP rating & these are important when considering lighting for use in bathrooms & outdoors.
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating refers to the degree of protection an electrical enclosure can provide against the intrusion of solid objects (such as dust) and water. They are important to consider when selecting light fittings for use in the bathroom or outdoors as they help you understand where a light fitting can be safely used.
Using a light fitting without the correct IP rating can be dangerous, and can potentially expose the electrical components to water and dust and increase the risk for injury and damage. IP ratings are especially important in outdoor areas where your fittings will be exposed to different weather conditions and in bathrooms where they will be exposed to water and moisture.
EMA Lighting has put together this IP ratings guide to help you make the right decision:
As demonstrated, the first digit refers to the solid object and the second number to the moisture. For instance, IP ratings of between 44 and 65 may be used for both indoor and general outdoor use. Anything lower than IP44 should only be used indoors, however. IP44 outdoor lights can withstand rain and are safe to use outdoors, however should not be exposed to pressurised water such as a jet wash.
